Was anyone else kept up all night by simultaneous contrast? I dreamed that our visual system *could* work in a way where we know that the two gray swatches are identical-on-the-retina, while also making inferences about their relative reflectances and illuminations. But instead, I woke up to the reality that our internal percept is that the color-on-the-retina is different. Does that bother anyone else?

On page 8, in the Pictorial Space, Jan Koenderink describes the kid’s toy that has 2 knobs controlling X and Y coordinates as a “painful experience,” and “many interfaces on encounters in the psychological laboratory are easily as unnatural.” Giving the popularity of VR and VR video games, what do you think Koenderink would think about a VR experience? How “natural,” as he says, would it be?
